World Cup -Saturday, June 12, 2010

Sleeping in until 8:00 was wonderful! Rich said he was awake on and off after 5:30, but I slept good and actually had eight hours of sleep. For me, that is a rare thing.

The day was cloudy and gloomy as expected. Rain was in the forecast, although it hadn't started yet. We had some errands to run so we hurried with our showers, scriptures, breakfast, etc. and left the house at 10:45. The dishes and house work could wait until we returned.

One of the main reasons we focused on getting "on the road" was because of the FIFA World Cup, which is a world wide soccer tornament. We haven't been soccer fans, in fact haven't even watched a whole soccer game -- and for sure didn't know what the World Cup was. But, since being in Argentina, we have become aware of it's importance to this country and others. Today Argentina was playing at 11:00 against Nigera. We know businesses close down for siesta in the afternoon, but we had heard that the whole of Buenos Aires slows down and sometimes stops while the World Cup is going on. So, would they close up shop while the game was going on???

We chanced it and took off up Calle Constitución hoping to get to the Kodak place to have some pictures printed off for a slew of people who have requested prints from photos we have taken. We want to distribute them while at church tomorrow.

The Kodak place was open and these faithful fans (two were employees) were watching the game on a horribly fuzzy television. We couldn't even tell which team was which. But they were glued to it and when Argentina scored, they were jumping and yelling and blowing a horn. We thought the hats were cute and they agreed to a picture.

After leaving with the 30 prints, we needed to find a libreria or some place where we could buy some envelopes, as we didn't want to hand out the pictures without a protective covering. We headed towards a libreria we knew about and were successful in finding what we needed.

On the way, we passed this fabric store which has an interesting way of displaying material. It was raining lightly with just an awning covering the pieces hanging outside. I thought of Melissa and other quilters or sewing fans who may enjoy seeing an example of how this store display their fabric.

Another view -- not fancy inside and very open, indeed!

We were stunned that the streets looked so vacant on a Saturday morning on Constitucion. Some stores and cafe's were open, but people were sitting or standing around watching the Argentina game. Soccer and the World Cup is a BIG DEAL in Argentina.

As far as we could see down the street, there was not one car coming. Unbelievable for a Saturday!! It was worth it to be out and about observing it for ourselves. Rather fun!

Our favorite little Mom and Pop empanada place was open, so we stopped in to buy some to eat for lunches during the week. It beats making sandwiches every morning and we just have to heat them up in the microwave at the office. They also make various kinds of ravioli, and more.

These are the jefes (bosses) who own the business. They are a cute little married couple who make a good team.

We bought a variety of empanadas filled with chicken, meat, and tomato and cheese. They are not skimpy on their fillings, and oh so good!

The soccer game was about half over when we returned home so we watched the rest of it. A player named Messi from Argentina is suppose to be the best soccer player in the world. He missed a few today, however. The game ended with Argentina 1 and Nigera 0. They play again next Thursday. The U.S. has a team and they tied England today 1 to 1.

We cleaned up the apartment, washed some whites, and then watched the movie Blind Side. We downloaded it and then watched it on our TV. It was a good movie and we enjoyed it. Rich thinks that anything with Sandra Bullock in it is good.

It rained all day so we were glad to be inside and out of the cold and damp weather. I wrapped Mekhi's birthday presents and hope to get them sent the first part of the week.

Tomorrow is Branch Conference.

  2. World cup soccer is just that, world-wide! The French aren't as excited about their team this year because they haven't been doing too well.

We love your detailed comments and cute pictures. As you saw by our blog last week, we watched Blind Side and loved it! Our weather has been warm and rainy. It's so odd not to have sunshine in June!

Our missionaries were supposed to come yesterday, but didn't. We have no idea what is happening with them and hope to learn more today.
