We slept in today on purpose because we didn't have anywhere to go when we got up. Church had been canceled. Now that sounds funny doesn't it? But it really was the case today. Because of the Swine Flu epidemic, all public gatherings are being cancelled around Buenos Aires. The schools are out on vacation right now, and they will not resume when scheduled. They are keeping the children out for a couple of weeks longer. Then, any concerts or public gatherings are being cancelled, church as well. So our stake presidents are making decisions regarding if, and when, and how often church meetings should be held. Some stakes had only sacrament meeting today and said that elderly members, pregnant sisters, and sickly people should stay home. Our stake president decided to cancel all meetings. They will evaluate the situation a week at a time. If Sunday meetings are not held, it is difficult for missionary work because people baptized on Saturday cannot be confirmed on Sunday in church. I don't know how that will be resolved.
It is hoped that by decreasing public gatherings until after the flu season diminishes that perhaps it will not spread. We hear that next to the U.S. and Mexico that Argentina is a country plagued with the virus as well.
The Area President has sent word down to the missions that there is not to be any handshaking, or abrazos (hugging with pat on back) between missionaries or with members. We are to have hand sanitizer with alcohol available to use several times throughout the day. Sounds serious, doesn't it.
So our Sunday has been a bit strange today. I have been inside all day long. Rich did go to the church to help the elders teach a young man. We talked with our daughters and grandsons, and son-in-law on Skype, but that is all we have done today. A good day to work on emails and journal entries.
